DEVO / Gift Wrapped, Vol. II: Snowed In / 2010
Merry Something to You
flat, ironic cheerfulness bordering on blankness
A deadpan, synthetic holiday jingle that mimics the generic cheer of a mall PA system while quietly hollowing it out. Devo takes the inclusive "happy holidays" sentiment to its logical extreme until it curdles into shrugging nihilism.
commercialized holiday cheer religious pluralism as marketing nihilism consumption and excess irony toward sincerity
Who's speaking
An unnamed, almost robotic announcer-narrator addresses a generalized "you" -- any listener, any faith, any consumer -- in the manner of a greeting card or store intercom. The voice is deliberately unreliable in its sincerity; it performs goodwill without conviction.
What happens
The song moves through a checklist of holiday-season permissions: whatever your religion, whatever your dance, whatever and however much you eat, whatever you believe. Each item is capped by the same refrain, so the song doesn't develop so much as accumulate items on a list before collapsing into a repeated, increasingly empty-sounding well-wish.
How it's built
Built as a call-and-response list song: four short declarative lines, each immediately answered by the same two-word refrain, functioning almost like a jingle's hook. The final section drops the list entirely and just loops a single mangled greeting four times, turning repetition itself into the payoff rather than any lyrical resolution.
Craft
- anaphora
- The repeated refrain after every line trains the ear to expect reassurance, which makes its hollowness more noticeable by the song's end.
- asyndeton
- The string of eating verbs piles up without conjunctions, mimicking gluttonous excess and comic overload rather than genuine description.
- bathos
- The drop from naming world religions to shrugging that nothing is really true deflates the opening's gesture at respectful inclusivity.
- pastiche
- The song apes the tone of commercial holiday jingles and PA announcements, a form Devo repeatedly mines elsewhere to expose consumerist conditioning.
