Genesis is a British rock band formed at Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey in 1967. The most commercially successful and longest-lasting line-up consisted of keyboardist Tony Banks, bassist/guitarist Mike Rutherford and drummer/singer Phil Collins. Former members include singer Peter Gabriel and guitarist Steve Hackett. The band is known for its complex song structures, intricate arrangements, and theatrical live shows.
Genesis started as a progressive rock band, but eventually moved towards more accessible, pop-friendly music in the 1980s, which led to them achieving significant commercial success. They are among the highest-selling recording artists of all time, with approximately 100 million albums sold worldwide.
Their early work is characterized by elaborate musical experimentation and features a theatrical approach to both music and stagecraft, heavily influenced by Gabriel's presence as the lead vocalist and frontman. After Gabriel's departure in 1975, Collins became the group's lead singer, and the band shifted to a more streamlined, commercially viable sound, which garnered them a wider audience.
Hits such as "Invisible Touch", "Land of Confusion", and "I Can't Dance" come from their later period and are indicative of their more synth-pop and soft rock oriented sound. Despite the changes in style and personnel over the years, Genesis has maintained a loyal fan base and continues to be revered in both progressive and mainstream rock circles.
